November Birthstone: All About the Citrine Crystal | Linjer Jewelry

What is citrine?

Citrine is a gorgeous yellow-to-orange quartz mineral whose name comes from the French word for lemon, citron. You may already be familiar with some of its family members, like rose quartz and amethyst.

This stone has been loved for thousands of years and thought to be a gift from the sun, giving it its nickname, “the summer stone”, representing joy, clarity, and warmth.

Despite its association with summer, citrine is actually one of the November Birthstones—alongside yellow topaz. But anyone can benefit from the warm optimism citrine brings.

Where is the citrine crystal found?

Natural citrine is most often found in Bolivia, Madagascar, Mexico, Spain and Uruguay, though it is sourced in other places as well. While natural citrine can be difficult to source, there are other means to obtain citrine—such as by using heat to treat certain quartz varieties such as smoky quartz and purple amethyst. Such heat treated citrine varieties often end up as a more vibrant and golden citrine compared to the natural variety, which more often manifests in pale yellow, lemony hues. Amethyst that has been heat treated into a citrine color is largely found in Brazil.

Citrine Crystal Cleaning and Care Tips

Ranking at a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, the citrine crystal is fairly durable, making it perfect for everyday wear!

The best way to clean your citrine crystals at home is with chemical-free dish soap and warm water.

Dip a soft-bristled toothbrush in the solution, and gently scrub the affected areas - your citrine should look as good as new!

We also recommend storing your citrine crystals away from your windows. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause your stones to fade and lose their beautiful hues.
